New Car Integration Gives iPhones Knight Rider-Like Interaction

CTIA WIRELESS 2012 — Clarion Corp. has released Next GATE, a smartphone controller for iPhone that interfaces with automobiles of all types for that Knight Rider-like intelligent navigator feel.

Well … perhaps it’s not quite as interactive as David Hasselhoff’s car sidekick in the classic series, but Next GATE does allow users to use their iPhone hands-free for hands-free calling and iPhone features such as voice dialing and voice activation.

It also offers drivers voice-control over a handful of useful apps. The handful of launch partners include radio apps TuneIn and Pandora, and a Vlingo voice recognition app for speech-to-text capabilities ideal to connect to email and social media channels while behind the wheel. There’s also INRIX Traffic and InfoGation for turn-by-turn directions. Other apps are in the works and Clarion’s new Smart Access Cloud Telematics Service will enable users to download additional approved apps under development now and in the future.

The Next GATE is portable, featuring a 7-inch display that mounts to a windshield. It offers a built-in speaker, microphone and audio output for a vehicle auxiliary jack. The Next GATE is compatible with iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, and has a 12-volt power adapter for easy connection which also allows for charging while in-use.
