Nuance Communications Inc.  (Nasdaq: NUAN) has just announced Dragon Drive!, a new iteration of its Dragon speech recognition software designed for installation in connected, Internet-enabled cars. It doesn’t come with a leather jacket or a perm, but it will let you talk to your car like David Hasselhoff did in NBC’s Knight Rider.

Nuance is starting with Dragon Drive! Messaging, a hands-free, eyes-ahead communication tool for drivers. When embedded in connected cars by auto manufacturers, it’s designed to let drivers send text messages, listen to emails read aloud, look up addresses and get directions. Nuance is calling it the first in a series of connected services.

A news release issued Tuesday morning quotes Arnd Weil, vice president and general manager, automotive, Nuance Mobile. “The entire automotive ecosystem faces a critical challenge – keep consumers connected to the content they love, without imposing dangerous distractions behind the wheel,” he said.

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) in March unveiled a “Microsoft car” – a 1967 Ford Mustang the technology giant tricked out with “Windows, Windows Phone, Windows Azure, Xbox, Kinect, Bing,” and other Microsoft technologies. The car was customized in partnership with West Coast Customs, a garage made famous by the MTV program, Pimp My Ride.

Dragon Drive! is available to auto manufacturers for installation in cars, and via a web-based service. It’s an auto makers equivalent to Nuance’s Dragon Go! mobile app for iOS and Android, the Burlington, Mass., software company states.
