Program Provides Speech-To-Text Phone for Hard of Hearing

How speech technology can effectively help the hearing impaired…

It’s a common phrase, “I’m talking on the phone.”

But hearing on the phone is a big part of talking on the phone.

“Hearing is much more than being able to hear what an individual said. We don’t hear with our ears, we hear with our brain,” said Dr. Terri Schneider.

Barbara Phillips said her friend is hard of hearing.

“I have to do his phone calling for him. It’s really hard to talk on the phone when you have two hearing aids and you’re so hard of hearing,” Phillips said.

Phillips may not have to make those calls anymore. Caption Call is a free federally supported program that provides voice-to-text phone services. All an individual needs is a land line and an Internet connection.

“When someone places a call or a call comes in, what the person who calls said shows up on a screen where the words that are being said are displayed,” Schneider said.

The program is for anyone hard of hearing. There are no age or income restrictions.  Phillips said she’s had that blank stare before—the one that said “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“You have that dense on your face because you can’t hear. And someone will ask you a question and you will answer entirely different. I have done that so many times. Makes you feel like a fool,” Phillips said.
